Before we start! If you feel any sort of serious negativity or possibly depression, please seek a professional or call a hotline for better assistance.

I’m in no way a professional. These are tips that have helped me avoid negativity and ultimately made me a happier person.

With that being said, let’s dive in!

Avoid negativity

Let Go of Bad Influences

A lot of times, it’s the people in our lives that bring us down the most.

You need to let go of the people that have a bad influence on you. If it’s a negative friend, begin shortening the connection.

If it’s a family member, avoid communication with them and be around them less. This is the first step, but the hardest step.

Letting go of someone you care about can be tough, but your mental health is more important than a relationship.

seeking positivity

Seek Positivity

Instead of trying to avoid negativity, try seeking positivity.

Put yourself in positions where you are meeting positive people and doing things you love to do. This works better than just avoiding the negativity because you aren’t isolating yourself.

You still want to be around the company of good people that you can spend time with. Focus on having a good time instead of using those friends to talk about the negative things in life. It is more beneficial for both parties.

Occupy Yourself

There are so many things you can do to keep yourself even more busy. Turning that negativity into a positive is what it’s all about.

Take out that energy in the gym, at a party, getting loose with friends, and anything else you can think of.

If you’re not motivated to do the things that you normally love to do, try to push out of that. Start getting back into habits and hobbies that you loved doing.

Try your best to hang out in group settings as well. There will always be time to be alone, but go out as much as you can.

Don’t Send It Back

The one choice you do have about avoiding negativity is how to react to it. They way you react to it determines the outcome for the future.

If someone has a negative influence on you, don’t respond with negativity. Take the conversation in your control and respond positively.

You’ll be surprised how fast the other person will become positive. And if they still aren’t, slowly get yourself out of that situation. Don’t take other people’s negativity personally. They don’t mean for it to affect you so you shouldn’t let it affect you either.

Stay in the Present

Many times, our negativity comes from situations that have happened or that will happen in the future.

When you stress yourself out about those things, remind yourself to focus on right now. Are you okay at the moment? Do you have good friends surrounding you? Is your job keeping you busy and making you money?

If the present still upsets you, that’s okay! Getting back to a positive mindset takes time. However, if the present is comfortable and you aren’t struggling, then take it one day at a time.

Stay in the present

Don’t Assume Things

Similar to point #5, you shouldn’t overthink things that haven’t happened or that are not confirmed.

If you’re allowing negativity inside of you because of assumption that something bad is happening, identify that and stop it immediately.

Sometimes talking yourself through a situation is the best way to avoid the negativity. Stop assuming that someone is talking behind your back or that someone is thinking something bad about you.

Unless you know that it is certain, you are wasting your time and mental energy. Stay positive and take away the assumption from certain situations.

Be Grateful

This is possibly the greatest tip to avoid negativity. When you are grateful, you’ll realize that the positives outweigh the negatives.

Every morning or night, tell yourself 2 things you are grateful for today. I have been doing this for a long time and it makes me feel so much better about things. Things will get better, that’s just human nature.

Be grateful, keep your head up, and smile. Life is going to be just fine!
